Community pharmacies to receive an extra £617 million over two years

Patients in Newcastle North are set to benefit from more services at their local pharmacy following a new deal between the Labour Government and Community Pharmacy England.

Under the previous Government, years of underfunding and neglect left the sector facing significant shortfalls, impacting Newcastle North’s community pharmacies and patients.

The new deal is the first full-year funding package agreed by the sector since 2023, providing community pharmacies with an extra £617 million over two years. In addition to the investment, the Government has announced reforms to ensure that patients can access care and support within the local community.

The reforms will not only improve access for patients, but they will also free up GP time and help cut waiting lists.

Catherine commented:

“Earlier this year, I met with community pharmacy leaders who shared their concerns about the challenges and pressures that they were facing after 14 years of neglect by the previous government.

“The new investment shows Labour’s commitment to getting community pharmacies back on their feet, so they are ready for the future and able to serve the local area.”
